A catch-all alias is an alias that will catch any incoming email sent to an invalid address on a domain. Instead of bouncing the message back to the sender, the message will be stored in the mailbox that is assigned to the catch-all alias. (A catch-all acts as any other user alias, so once it's created, an account has to be assigned to it.)

If you find that customers frequently send emails to accounts that do not exist, setting up a catch-all alias may be beneficial. However, the use of a catch-all alias has the disadvantage of allowing spammers to send unwanted messages to random addresses, which can stress the mail server and affect performance.

By Default "Catch All Addressing" is turned OFF or Disabled on EPhosts Windows & Linux Hosting plans.  Please follow the directions below to enable, if you desire to use this feature with your hosting or email plan.

Windows Hosting Account

  1. Login to your Account
  2. Click on the green "Control Panel" button
  3. Hover over the Mail Icon and click on 'Domains'
  4. Click on the domain name you wish to work with
  5. Where it says "Catch-All Account", change to <Not Selected> or to an existing email you want all non specified email to go to
  6. Click 'Update'

NOTE: It is important to never set an auto-responder on an email account that the catch-all forwards to, as it may result in backscatter. This can cause your domain to be blacklisted. In addition, additional bandwidth usage will result. If you do not see the option for adding a catch-all, please contact your system administrator as they may have disabled the option.

Linux Hosted Account

  1. Login to your Account
  2. Click on the green "Control Panel" button
  3. Go to the 'Email' section and click on 'Default Address'
  4. Under the "Default Address Maintenance", use the drop down to select which domain name, you wish to 'Send all unrouted email'
  5. Select either
    1. 'Discard the email wile your server processes it by SMTP time with an error message' -or-
    2. 'Forward to Email Address' and enter a known good email that you have access to
  6. Click 'Change'

NOTE: under the 'Advanced Options you can forward email to the main account holder, send to a program for processing or simply discard the email
