WINDOWS
Using your web hosting control panel: The File Manager lets you browse, create, edit, upload and move folders and documents for your domain. The File Manager is essentially a multi-function What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (WYSIWYG) HTML editor (graphical editing).
- Login to your account
- Click on the Green "Control Panel" button
- Choose "File Manager" from the Domain Menu.
- Choose the name of the file that you would like to edit.
You can up/down, copy/move & delete files. Selecting icons next to the files themselves allow for renaming or editing them
LINUX
- Login to your account
- Click on the Green "Control Panel" button
- Under the File section of the cPanel - Click on "File Manager"
You can navigate, edit, delete, change permissions, upload, download and many various actions
WARNING: You can permanently change/delete a page using this tool. We do not suggest you edit complex HTML pages, pages using a lot of Javascript, or poorly constructed HTML pages using this tool. Contact your web developer.
NOTES:
- Only HTML files (.htm and .html) will appear in the WYSIWYG HTML editor (graphical editing). Non-HTML files, like Cold Fusion pages, will open the file in "text" mode, which you can still use to edit the file's source code and save.
- Use full URLs when referencing images and links. When opening your HTML page in the WYSIWYG editor, some images may appear to be broken. If they were working previously, there is likely no problem- they will work again when you save the page. This is because the location (HREF) to the image was done relative to the document root of the website. Thus the WYSIWYG editor will not know this and incorrectly show broken images. You can avoid this issue by changing the location (HREF) to the fully qualified URL. e.g. You should add: "http://www.mywebsite.com/" to the file name so it would look like: "http://www.mywebsite.com/my-image.jpg". To do this, click on an image, and click the "picture" icon from the WYSIWYG editor.
- Create a copy of the file first for backup reasons. Simply check the box next to the file, and click the "copy" icon above to copy. If you mouse-over the icon for a few seconds (IE/Chrome/Firefox/Safari Browsers) it will tell you what the icon does. Leave the name of the new file "copy of such and such.html".
- To edit the file, click on the file name and it will open the file in HTML preview window. Begin editing by putting the cursor in the HTML preview window where you want to edit and start typing. Use the tools to bold or insert links and images. This is very similar to MS Word. When you have completed your edits, click save. When you save the file it is permanently overwritten with the new version. If you want to leave your changes, click elsewhere on the page to visit a new mage and manually navigate back.
- You can upload files using this tool. For instance, if you want to upload an image, navigate to the appropriate folder, click the "Upload" icon and use the "browse" to select the file you want upload. Once you have selected the file, click the green "checkmark" icon to upload.
- When inserting images you'll need to specify the full URL to the image. e.g. "http://www.ephost.com/myimage.jpg".
