The question could be phrased as, "How many domains can I afford to buy?" or "How many domains can I manage or build?", the answer really comes down to you can have as many domain names as you desire to own and manage.
Aside from web hosting, many people use extra domains so they can just point them to their main website. Perhaps to cover common misspellings or industry terms that might help in the search engines.
A good rule of thumb, and an affordable one, is to only to buy domains that are genuinely helpful to your users. For example, if your company was: "www.misspelling.com" you might want to get: "www.mispelling.com."
